COLLECTIVE THOUGHT CREATES OUR REALITY 24/7

The philosophy out of which these prayers were born is what Jesus, Gandhi, the saints and all great religious philosophers have taught, although they have not used these words: that what is inside us is reflected outside of us. This is known as "macrocosm mirrors microcosm" and "as above so below."

Let me restate that three ways:

Greater society reflects what is going on in our own hearts and homes.

If there is conflict in the world, it means there is conflict in us, in our souls.

The violence and conflict we see "out there" exists because it is "in here."

Therefore, because we create the world with our thoughts and emotions, "we must become the world we want" in order to change the world.

That is why Jesus said, "Cast the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye." [Matthew 7:5].

Our job is to change and heal our own thoughts, not change anyone else. Yet, if we do heal, we will find that those around us will change also.

Since humanity's collective thought created the problems, I realized that millions of people would be needed to deliberately "uncreate" or counteract the mind set of the billions of people that keep those problems in place.

While I had no doubt that the prayers I was being guided to write could help create a new mind set, the question was: how could I circulate my prayers? How could I get enough people to read them and add their energy to them?

It occurred to me that people might read them—and join with me in envisioning healing—if I created a prayer website, but I found myself making excuses as to why I couldn't do it.

I DIDN'T UNDERSTAND THE URGENCY

Call it false humility or call it cowardice, whatever the reasons, I got sidetracked.

I know, now, that I was being nagged to get on with this work, because dark days were coming, but I didn't understand the messages God was giving me, or the urgency.

Then everything - including the symbolism of smoke billowing up from a red, white and blue landscape I created in 1999 - became all too clear on September 11, 2001.

By the end of 2002 I looked around to see a world more in jeopardy than ever. So, I pulled out my prayers and looked at them.

Some were no longer relevant because even worse problems had come into being. Others seemed to have been written to ward off terrible events that had occurred.

Looking at them, I realized it was "now or never." I knew I had to create a prayer website or throw away what I had written, forget all about it and tell God: "Not me. Get someone else to do it."

I couldn't say that. I could not escape the idea that I was being guided to write prayers that spoke to the hidden causes of the events going on around us.

Everywhere I turned it seemed I received words of encouragement about how important it was to face our most pressing needs in prayer and make those prayers available on the Internet.

THE WORK

Considering how long the human race has struggled with violence and conflict, it became clear to me that I could not afford to hold back.

This brings me to why a good number of these prayers address subjects that may seem "worldly" or "dark" and why they are longer, perhaps, than you are used to.

First off, we have to face the dark parts within us. Running doesn't work. Only holding the dark up to the Light can heal what keeps us trapped in behaviors or lives we don't like.

Second, just as it takes a lot of water to clean out a bucket full of mud, it can take a lot of positive affirmation and prayer to cleanse a mind of self-criticism and negativity.

So these prayers are exactly as they are meant to be, and as I was guided to write them.

Lastly, let me talk about the name of my book. There are people who have told me I should have named it "Prayerforce: 5 Minutes To A New Life."

That would not have been an untrue name, since once you begin reading these prayers, you will begin to change and your life will not be entirely the same.

But, really, implying that you can change your life completely in five minutes? Implying that everything - including your finances - will be miraculously transformed after five minutes of prayer?

Maybe I'm wrong, but I think that title would have been dishonest and disrespectful of you because I think we both know better.
